The Kansas City Royals placed outfielder Lorenzo Cain on the 15-day disabled list with a left oblique strain, the team announced Saturday.

The outfielder strained his left oblique taking batting practice Friday.

Cain injured his oblique muscle Friday during batting practice. Royals manager Ned Yost talked about Cain’s injury, telling Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star:
“On his first swing, he said he felt a ‘little something. Just a little discomfort. He took one swing, felt it; took another swing, it got worse; his third swing, he swung and missed and walked out of the cage.”

Cain hit .258/.321/.359 while serving as the Royals primary centerfielder. Cain has provided value despite his below-average hitting; he has been one of the best outfield defenders in baseball. ESPN voted Cain as the best overall defensive player in July, crediting him with saving 11 runs during the month.

The Royals acquired Justin Maxwell before the non-waiver trade deadline, and he will likely see increased playing time as the only right-handed hitting outfielder currently on the 25-man roster. Jarrod Dyson will also see more playing time in centerfield.
