Matt Moore injury: Rays SP to throw off mound for first time since landing on DL

Moore has been out since late July. A bullpen session Sunday will help the Rays know how much longer they’ll be without their All-Star pitcher.

Tampa Bay Rays starting pitcher Matt Moore is slated to throw off a mound on Sunday for the first time since being placed on the disabled list with left elbow soreness, reports the Tampa Bay Times.

The Rays had Moore playing catch a few times since sustaining the injury, with the latest session coming on Saturday. Moore reportedly felt good following that and was cleared to pitch in the bullpen. His performance Sunday coupled with how the elbow feels on Monday will determine the next course of action for Tampa Bay and will help set a timetable for Moore’s return.

Moore, 24, was placed on the disabled list two days after allowing five earned runs in five innings against the Yankees. He felt soreness following the start, and the Rays did not want to take any chances with their talented young pitcher. An MRI on the arm showed no structural damage.

On the season, Moore has a 3.41 ERA and 1.229 WHIP over 21 starts. He was named an All-Star for the first time in his career when he replaced Yu Darvish on the American League roster.
