The Arizona Diamondbacks called up top third base prospect Matt Davidson from Triple-A Reno on Sunday, reports ArizonaSports.com. The team also brought up reliever Eury De La Rosa while optioning David Hernandez.

Davidson, one of the Diamondbacks’ top prospects, will be in the majors for the first time along with fellow call-up Eury De La Rosa.

Davidson has been ranked as one of Baseball America’s top 100 prospects in the nation three years in a row, topping out as the 88th best prospect prior to 2013.

The third baseman certainly has some pop in his bat. He had hit 20 home runs each of the past two seasons and won the Triple-A Home Run Derby a month ago. He was also named the MVP of the futures game.
Davidson was hitting .278/.348/.484 with 16 home runs in his first year in Triple-A.
It appears third baseman Eric Chavez is on his way to the disabled list, which explains why Davidson was called up now. The Diamondbacks still have Martin Prado to play third base, so it remains to be seen how much playing time Davidson will see.
De La Rosa is also getting his first opportunity in the majors. He has not had the best season in 2013, posting a 5.26 ERA over 44 relief appearances at Reno. He has had some control issues pop up and has walked nearly five batters per nine innings. However, his 2012 campaign was excellent. He posted a 2.84 ERA over 44 games that year, with four strikeouts to every walk.
The man De La Rosa is replacing, David Hernandez, has had his own struggles in 2013 as a member of the D-Backs bullpen. Over 48 games he has a 5.59 ERA and 1.324 WHIP. Hernandez has given up nine earned runs over his last six appearances.
