The Chicago White Sox officially acquired Leury Garcia as the player to be named later in the Alex Rios trade, the team announced Sunday. Garcia had been the rumored PTNBL since the the Rangers and White Sox announced the deal on Aug. 9.

Garcia is a 22-year-old infielder who primarily plays shortstop, but has also spent time at second base, third base and center field. The prospect’s best tool is his speed, stealing 30-plus bases in 2011 and 2012.

The infielder is considered a strong defender, but hasn’t impressed at the plate. Never an especially powerful or patient hitter in the minors, Garcia’s always relied on his batting average to provide offensive value.
The Rangers brought Garcia up from Triple-A for a few games earlier this season. He hit .192/.236/.231 with one stolen base, three walks and 16 strikeouts in 57 plate appearances. Garcia batted .264/.314/.409 in 208 plate appearances in Triple-A.
With the completion of the deal Sunday, Garcia apparently cleared waivers without being claimed. There’s no way he could’ve been traded without it happening, though it’s a tad surprising that 28 teams passed on an affordable, young infielder with plus defense.
