Mariano Rivera blows 3 straight saves for first time ever

Miguel Cabrera also became the first hitter to hit home runs off Rivera in consecutive at-bats.

New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera suffered his third straight blown save Sunday against the Detroit Tigers in a 5-4 victory. It's the first time Rivera has ever failed to convert on three consecutive save opportunities.

Rivera had blown two saves in a row on 10 occasions before his current three-game blown save streak, the most recent coming in April of 2011. The last Yankee to blow three straight saves was Kyle Farnsworth in 2006, according to Jeff Quaglita of YES Network.

The closer blew the first save of the streak on Aug. 7 against the Chicago White Sox. Gordon Beckham smacked a two-out single, then Adam Dunn plated Beckham with a pinch-hit single. New York ended up losing the game 6-5.

The next two blown saves came against the Tigers. Miguel Cabrera blasted a two-run homer off Rivera on Friday night, but the Yankees would come back to win, 4-3.

Cabrera hit another home run Sunday against Rivera, becoming the first player to ever hit home runs off Rivera in consecutive at-bats, according to ESPN Stats and Info. Victor Martinez tied the game with a solo blast of his own.
