Jamey Carroll traded to Kansas City Royals

The Twins will receive a PTBNL or cash for the veteran second baseman.

The Kansas City Royals acquired second baseman Jamey Carroll in a waiver trade and will send the Minnesota Twins a player to be named later or cash considerations, the team announced Sunday.

Carroll has struggled at the plate in a part-time role for the Twins, hitting .230/.284/.262 in 202 plate appearances. The second baseman has been considered a strong defender throughout his career, but defensive metrics have rated him below-average in 2013.

The Royals will announce a corresponding roster move Monday. Utility infielder Elliot Johnson is a likely candidate to be designated for assignment; Johnson served as the team's starting second baseman earlier this season, but has collapsed offensively, batting .187/.227/.252.

Kansas City second basemen have struggled all season, hitting a combined .227/.276/.301. Miguel Tejada had been the most recent starter at second, but suffered a calf strain Saturday night, earning a trip to the 15-day DL.

Left-handed hitting Chris Getz is eligible to return from the 15-day DL Monday, and could provide a platoon partner for the right-handed hitting Carroll.
