Cody Ross injury: Diamondbacks OF dislocates right hip

The outfielder injured his hip trying to beat out a ground ball in the first inning.

Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Cody Ross left Sunday's game early against the New York Mets with a dislocated right hip, the team announced.

Ross suffered the injury in the bottom half of the first. The 32-year-old hit a slow roller to third base, and hustled down the line to beat out the ground ball. Ross appeared to stumble before hitting the bag, and immediately fell to the ground in pain after the play.

Ross had to be lifted on a medical cart and driven off the field. Matt Davidson, making his major-league debut, replaced Ross in the lineup, moving Martin Prado from third base to left field.

The outfielder had a slow start to the season, but entered Sunday hitting .278/.332/.415. Ross has been one of the Diamondbacks’ hottest hitters, batting .405 with three homers and 10 RBI since July 26.

The Diamondbacks entered Sunday 6 1/2 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West and five games behind the Cincinnati Reds in the NL Wild Card. Prado and Jason Kubel will likely fill in for Ross in left, with Davidson playing third.
