Adrian Beltre runs into left field to avoid tag

I don’t think you’re allowed to do that, Adrian.

Thomas Campbell-USA TODAY Sports

Adrian Beltre is here for our amusement. Not so we can laugh at him, but so we can laugh with him. The latest in his never-ending series of random entertainment came on Sunday, when Beltre decided that he was going to get himself out of a rundown by taking off for left field, rather than be caught at third base by a tag:

Beltre-lf

Beltre ninjas his way out of being tagged, but the ump makes the right call -- left field is just ever-so-slightly out of the basepath. Even better than Beltre taking off knowing he was doomed, however, is that Astros shortstop Jake Elmore gave chase: Beltre was out from the moment that Elmore began to hunt him down, by virtue of running out of the basepath, but Elmore wasn't going to let a little thing like the rules get in the way of his prey.

I kind of wish umpire Phil Cuzzi had just let Elmore chase Beltre until he finally applied the tag, or waited to signal out until Beltre actually made it to third safely after running a few laps.
