Derek Jeter injury: Yankees SS heading back to Tampa for rehab

Jeter has to clear a few more hurdles before he can return to the Yankees lineup.

Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter will head back to Tampa Bay at the conclusion of the team's homestand to continue his rehab, reports John Harper and Stephen Lorenzo of the New York Daily News.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi discussed Jeter’s injury with the reporters, stating:

“He’ll continue to increase his work here. When we go on the road, I think he’ll probably go down to Tampa and resume baseball activities. I think at some point this week you’ll start seeing him do my favorite, tee and toss.”

Jeter has been back in New York and was seen throwing at Yankee Stadium over the weekend, but is still a few steps away from beginning rehab games. The shortstop has yet to run on his injured calf, but assumes he will run in the next few days, according to Mike Mazzeo of ESPNNewYork.com.

Jeter has been on the disabled list since Aug. 3 with a right calf strain. He has only appeared in five games in 2013 thanks to ankle and quad injures earlier in the year.
