Around the Bases: Alfonso Soriano sets personal single-game RBI record ... again

Yankees 11, Angels 3: Alfonso Soriano followed up a career night on Tuesday with another massive performance on Wednesday, accomplishing a pretty unbelievable feat:

Soriano hit a pair of home runs -- including a first-inning grand slam -- off of Jered Weaver, who allowed nine runs in five innings of work. Robinson Cano went a relatively-quiet 4-for-4 at the plate. Mike Trout went 2-for-4, extending his on-base streak to 36 consecutive games.

Diamondbacks 5, Orioles 4: Aaron Hill hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the 14th inning off of Bud Norris to give the D-Backs a sweep over the O's. All three games were won in the last at-bat. Norris, who made his first relief appearance since 2009 and just the second of his big-league career, walked the first two batters of the inning and recorded only one out before surrendering the game-deciding hit.

Unlike Norris, Tommy Hunter was excellent in relief for the Orioles, striking out four in three scoreless innings. He also did this:

Hill and three other D-Backs had two hits apiece, including rookie Matt Davidson, who played in his second major league game. Manny Machado had three hits and a homer for Baltimore.

Pirates 5, Cardinals 1: Pittsburgh snapped a four-game losing streak thanks to Francisco Liriano's stellar outing. Liriano bounced back from his worst start of his career to toss a 94-pitch complete game in St. Louis, allowing one run on four hits while notching six strikeouts.

Pedro Alvarez and Garrett Jones both homered for the Pirates, who received two hits apiece from Andrew McCutchen and Neil Walker.

Nationals 6, Giants 5: Washington nearly squandered a five-run lead in the final two innings, but a terrific catch by Denard Span saved the game -- and perhaps, the season -- for the Nats (here's a GIF, courtesy of CSN Bay Area):

Ryan Zimmerman and Jayson Werth had two hits apiece and Ian Desmond hit his 17th home run of the season in support of Jordan Zimmermann, who improved to 14-6 on the season by hurling seven innings of two-run ball. Brandon Belt had two hits and a homer for the Giants, who out-hit the Nationals, 13-8.

Tigers 6, White Sox 4: Miguel Cabrera homered for the sixth time in his last games -- and 38th time overall this season -- to lead Detroit to victory. Cabrera's three-run shot in the top of the third inning brought the Tigers back from a 3-0 deficit. Detroit added three more in the sixth inning and held off a couple of late rally attempts by Chicago.

Rick Porcello earned the win for the Tigers despite allowing 11 hits in six innings of work. He limited the damage to three runs.

Blue Jays 4, Red Sox 3: Toronto overcame Mike Napoli's game-tying two-run home run in the top of the ninth thanks to a walk-off infield single off the bat of Brett Lawrie.

Napoli's homer spoiled Esmil Rogers' solid start. Rogers lasted six innings and gave up just one run five hits while striking out six. Fortunately for everyone, Lawrie's walk-off did not spoil the significance of this:

Rajai Davis led the Jays with three hits, including this short single that turned into a Little League home run:

Rays 5, Mariners 4: Jason Bourgeois' walk-off bloop single capped off Tampa Bay's two-run rally in the bottom of the ninth inning. Wil Myers hit a two-run homer a few frames earlier, cutting into a 4-1 lead the Mariners built against David Price, who avoided his first loss in more than a month.

Indians 9, Twins 8: Joe Mauer went 5-for-7 at the plate, including a game-tying home run in the 10th inning, but the Tribe had a bunch of clutch hits of their own, including Jason Giambi's game-tying three-run homer in the eighth and Carlos Santana's go-ahead deep fly in the 10th.

Michael Brantley ultimately won the game on a 12th-inning sacrifice fly after Nick Swisher and Jason Kipnis started the inning with consecutive singles. Kipnis' three hits led the Tribe's offensive assault, which included 12 hits. The Twins pounded out 17 knocks in the loss.

Rangers 5, Brewers 4: Texas scored three runs in the seventh inning thanks to consecutive walks issued by Michael Gonzalez to start the inning and the entrance of John Axford into the game with runners on base. The unpredictable former closer allowed a walk a pair of run-scoring singles to turn a 4-2 lead into a 5-4 deficit, and Milwaukee was unable to recover.

Juan Francisco had two hits, including his 17th home run of the season, and drove in all four of the Brewers' runs in the loss.

Braves 6, Phillies 3: Atlanta beat up on John Lannan, who allowed five runs on four hits and three walks before leaving the game with one out in the second inning due to a knee injury. Despite the efforts of Dominic Brown, who had three hits, including his 27th home run of the year, the Phillies were unable to dig out of the early hole.

Jason Heyward doubled and homered and Chris Johnson knocked in three runs to help the Braves increase their stranglehold in the National League East.

Reds 5, Cubs 0: Bronson Arroyo coasted through seven scoreless innings, racking up seven strikeouts and allowing just two hits. Todd Frazier homered as part of his 2-for-4 day and Zack Cozart added a pair of hits for good measure.

Singles by David DeJesus and Darnell McDonald represented the Cubs' only hits of the day.

Marlins 5, Royals 2: Kansas City lost its first series since before the All-Star break after failing to take advantage of six walks issued by Miami starter Jacob Turner. The Royals managed just five hits in the game, while the Marlins tallied 12, including three off the bat of Justin Ruggiano.

Eric Hosmer had a pair of doubles for Kansas City's otherwise stagnant offense.

Rockies 4, Padres 2: Troy Tulowitzki emerged from a 2-for-28 slump with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate and Corey Dickerson added three hits to help Colorado earn its fifth win in its last six games.

Jorge De La Rosa broke out of his own mini-slump with a seven innings of two-run ball and was helped out of a sixth-inning jam by this unique double play turned by Nolan Arenado and Yorvit Torrealba.

Astros 2, Athetics 1: The A's once again lost ground to the Rangers against the Astros, when Robbie Grossman cost Chris Young yet another almost walk-off homer, and Carlos Corporan hit a game-winning double the next inning.

Dodgers 5, Mets 4: This one went 12 innings, and the Dodgers won on a walk-off double by Adrian Gonzalez. This after being down four runs earlier in the contest. It wasn't all done with the bats, though, as Yasiel Puig sent out his occasional reminder to never run on his arm.
