Rickie Weeks injury: Brewers 2B has surgery to repair torn hamstring

The Milwaukee second baseman will miss the rest of the season. Can rookie Scooter Gennett continue to play well in Weeks’ absence?

Ed Szczepanski-USA TODAY Sports

Updating a previous report, Milwaukee Brewers second baseman Rickie Weeks had surgery on Thursday for a torn hamstring. Weeks was hitting .209/.306/.357 this season with 10 home runs and seven stolen bases in 104 games. This is not the first time that Weeks has been injured.

Weeks played in just 118 games in 2011, missing significant time with an ankle injury. He played in only 37 games in 2009 before missing the rest of the year with a wrist injury. The nine-year major league veteran has only played 130 or more games in two seasons of his career.

The Brewers recalled second baseman Scooter Gennett to replace Weeks on Aug. 7. Gennett has been on fire since returning to the Brewers a week ago, going 9-for-19 at the plate with three home runs and six RBI. He struggled during his first MLB callup in June, hitting just .214/.250/.357.

Milwaukee will be hoping for more of what it has seen from Gennett, knowing that Weeks won’t be back this year. Weeks signed a five-year contract extension in 2011, but the team may void his 2015 option contingent upon missed plate appearances in 2013-2014.
