Gomez left Thursday's game against the Reds in the fourth inning after hitting the wall in center while robbing Brandon Phillips of an extra base hit with a fantastic catch. He was replaced by Logan Schafer immediately following the play.

Revealed later, Gomez sprained his right knee on the play, though further evaluation on Friday could change the diagnosis. At this point, there’s no indication of how much time he will miss with the injury, but a stint on the disabled list appears likely.

Gomez is having a career year at the plate this year, hitting .289/.340/.520 over 459 plate appearances. He is widely regarded as an excellent defender, as the Defensive Runs Saved metric credits him with saving 26 runs more than the average defender this season.
