Kolten Wong to join Cardinals on Friday

The Cardinals will call up second base prospect Kolten Wong on Friday, the team announced on Thursday.

USA TODAY Sports

The Cardinals will call up top infield prospect Kolten Wong on Friday, the team announced on Thursday, as reported by Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Wong was ranked the fifth-best prospect in the Cardinals system and the game’s 85th-best prospect overall by Baseball America prior to the 2013 season, and MLB.com ranked him the 79th best prospect in the game heading into this season. So far this year, he has furthered his reputation with an impressive performance at Triple-A. Wong has hit .303/.369/.466 in 107 plate appearances for Memphis of the Pacific Coast League this season.

To make room for Wong, the Cardinals will option outfielder Adron Chambers to Triple-A, according to Goold.

Wong's role with the Cardinals is uncertain at this point. He has played exclusively at second base as a minor leaguer and he would likely provided an upgrade to Matt Carpenter on defense there. Carpenter has been a force at the plate for St. Louis this year, however, hitting .315/.385/.480 and leading the league with 90 runs scored.

The Cardinals are in greater need of an upgrade at shortstop, where regular starter Pete Kozma has hit just .225/.273/.284 this season. However, it is unclear if Wong can handle moving to short. At least one expert, Baseball Prospectus' prospect writer Jason Parks, see that as a possibility, though, saying Wong is a "complete ballplayer. You can stick him anywhere and he'll make plays."
