Delmon Young, Rays have mutual interest

Young could return this season to the team that drafted him.

USA TODAY Sports

There appears to be mutual interest between Delmon Young and the Tampa Bay Rays about a potential return, reports Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.

The Philadelphia Phillies designated the outfielder for assignment after the team acquired Casper Wells. Young refused his assignment to Triple-A, and will be free to sign elsewhere Saturday.

The outfielder hit .261/.302/.397 with eight home runs in 291 plate appearances, and struggled in the outfield after undergoing offseason surgery on his ankle.

The 27-year-old has played with four teams in the past eight years. The Rays picked Young No. 1 overall in 2003, but sent Young to the Minnesota Twins in 2007 for package headlined by Matt Garza.

The Rays are looking to add another right-handed bat off the bench. Sean Rodriguez and Jason Bourgeois are the only two right-handed hitters currently on the Tampa Bay bench, and Young could platoon with Luke Scott at designated hitter, which would hide him defensively.
