Matt Moore injury: Rays hope LHP can start next weekend

Moore wanted to return this weekend, but felt some discomfort after throwing a bullpen session.

The Tampa Bay Rays hope that pitcher Matt Moore will start next weekend, reports Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.

Moore has been sidelined with a sore left elbow since July 31. The starter had hoped to return this weekend, but felt discomfort after throwing a 55-pitch bullpen session. He felt discomfort primarily while throwing his changeup, which prompted the Rays to take a cautionary approach.

Moore discussed his session with the Associated Press, stating:

“I felt good, but good isn’t great, and great is 100 percent, What we’re really aiming for is to be back out there and be 100 percent.”

The southpaw will not throw again until Sunday, then will be reevaluated after the session.

Moore has had an excellent sophomore campaign for Tampa Bay, going 14-3 with a 3.41 ERA. The Rays can afford to be cautious with their young pitcher; the club has enviable starting pitching depth, and Alex Cobb made a successful return to the rotation Thursday.

Cobb had been sidelined since June 15 after being hit in the head by a line drive. The right-hander started the season 6-2 with a 3.06 ERA and tossed five strong innings in his return, holding the Mariners to three hits and one run while striking out six.
