Eric Wedge could return to Mariners next homestand

Wedge has been away from the team since suffering a minor stroke on July 22. Robby Thompson has been serving as the interim manager for the Mariners, and told the reporter:

”He’s doing really good. He’s doing outstanding. I talked to him yesterday. He’s passing everything with flying colors, he’s feeling much better. And there’s a real good chance that he’ll rejoin us when we get back. That’s kind of where it stands right now.

General manager Jack Zduriencik has indicated that he wants Wedge completely healthy when he returns, telling telling Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times.

“But the one thing you don’t want to have happen, when he gets back, you want him to be back. His anxiousness to get back here in the dugout is one thing, but it’s a lifelong health issue for him. As well, when he gets back here managing this club, you want him to be here. You don’t want him to come in and be here for two or three days.”

It is unknown whether Wedge will resume full managerial duties, or whether Thompson will take on an expanded role to help ease Wedge back into his role.

The Mariners have gone 9-12 since Thompson took over, and enter Friday with a 55-65 overall record.
