John Jaso injury: Athletics C could miss remainder of season

Jaso is still feeling symptoms from a concussion he suffered three weeks ago and may be out until 2014.

Oakland Athletics catcher John Jaso's 2013 season is in danger, as his concussion may keep him from playing until next season, reports MLB.com.

“Whether he comes back this year, I’m not sure,” A’s manager Bob Melvin was quoted as saying. “We certainly hold out hope for that, but I don’t think anybody can predict that at this point.”

The Athletics placed Jaso on the disabled list July 25 due to concussion symptoms following a foul tip striking him in the catcher’s mask on two consecutive nights. The original prognosis indicated that he may have been able to return after the minimum of seven days, but his symptoms lingered. Now, the best-case scenario appears to be Jaso returning after three more weeks.

Jaso has been taking part in visual exercises that will help stimulate his brain in hopes of hastening his recovery. However, the backstop says he still gets queasy and car sick often, and wakes up most mornings with a ringing in his ears. He has also dealt with bouts of vertigo.

Melvin said that the team would have a better idea of when Jaso could return when he begins baseball activities again. However, Jaso is not near that point yet.

Jaso has hit .271/.387/.372 over 70 games while splitting time with Derek Norris.
