Rays’ Matt Moore pain free while playing catch

Moore still does not have a timetable for a return, but it looks like he could be back in the rotation sooner rather than later.

Tampa Bay Rays starting pitcher Matt Moore threw 55 times from 75 feet on Sunday and said after that he felt pain-free, reports Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times.

Moore will play catch again on Monday and continue playing each day moving forward, provided he does not suffer any setbacks. Despite the progress, the Rays do not yet have a timetable on Moore’s return to the rotation.

Moore has not pitched since July 28 after being placed on the disabled list with right elbow soreness. An MRI at the time showed no structural damage, but Moore’s recovery has been a bit slower than originally anticipated. There had been some hope that he could return to the rotation by Saturday, but the Rays are being cautious with their young star.

There is a possibility that Moore could return by next week. He will need to throw off a mound before the Rays have a better idea of how likely that may be. His being pain-free after throwing is, of course, a great sign.

Over 21 starts in 2013, Moore has a 3.41 ERA and 1.228 WHIP. He has had some command issues, but was still chosen to play in his first career All-Star game.
