Miguel Cabrera hits 40th home run, ties Joe DiMaggio on all-time list

The third baseman is on pace for a better season this year than his Triple Crown-winning performance last year.

Miguel Cabrera hit his 40th home run of the season, tying Joe DiMaggio for 77th on the all-time home run list with his 361st career home run.

Cabrera turned on the first pitch he saw Sunday, roping an 85-mph fastball from Bruce Chen that stayed up in the strike zone for a two-run blast. The third baseman hit home runs on consecutive swings against the Royals; Cabrera hit a walk-off home run Saturday night against Aaron Crow.

The slugger hit 40 home runs for the first time in one season last year, reaching the accomplishment on Sept. 18. Cabrera is ahead of last season’s pace by a month, leaving him 38 games to break his career-high of 44 home runs.

Cabrera ended up winning the AL Triple Crown last year, but is on pace for a better season this year, entering Sunday batting .358/.450/.683. He leads the AL in batting average and runs batted in, but trails Orioles first baseman Chris Davis by five home runs.
