Around the Bases: Alex Rodriguez gets revenge on Ryan Dempster, Adam Wainwright strikes out 11

Cardinals 6, Cubs 1: Adam Wainwright struck out 11 in seven innings for his 14th win of the season to help pull St. Louis to within a game of the Pirates in the National League Central. Jon Jay homered and drove in four runs for the Cardinals, who took two of three games at Wrigley Field over the weekend. Yadier Molina, who was activated from the disabled list on Friday, had his second straight multi-hit game on Sunday for St. Louis.

Diamondbacks 4, Pirates 2 (16): Adam Eaton hit a two-run double to center field in the 16th inning to give Arizona their fifth win in six games. Pittsburgh led 2-0 after three innings, but was held scoreless over the final 13 frames in the loss. Kris Johnson, a 28-year-old journeyman, became the first pitcher to throw six innings of relief in his major league debut since Mike Bascik in 2001, but Johnson also took the loss.

Rays 2, Blue Jays 1 (10): This pitchers' duel featured only three runs, and all three runs were scored via solo home run. Evan Longoria gave Tampa Bay the lead in the first inning and Edwin Encarnacion tied the game for Toronto in the seventh. But it was backup catcher Jose Lobaton who provided the winning margin with a walk-off home run in the 10th inning, to move Tampa Bay within a game of the American League East lead.

Yankees 9, Red Sox 6: Brett Gardner's three-run triple keyed a four-run sixth inning that gave the Yankees the lead. Alex Rodriguez, who was hit by a Ryan Dempster pitch in the second inning, got his revenge in the sixth with a solo home run. CC Sabathia allowed six runs but picked up the victory, the first time he had ever done that.

CC Sabathia has never won a game when he gave up 6 runs or more. (He's won 9 when giving up 5) He's in line for the win right now.

Athletics 7, Indians 3: Home runs by Chris Young and Alberto Callaspo in the fifth inning broke a 3-3 tie for Oakland, who won two of three games over the weekend at home against the Indians to pull within a half-game of Texas in the American League West. The Athletics bullpen threw 4⅓ scoreless innings to close out the win.

Mariners 4, Rangers 3: Kyle Seager doubled home Endy Chavez in the top of the ninth to give Seattle a 4-3 win. The Mariners captured two of three games on the road from the Rangers, who saw their American League West lead shrink to a half-game over Oakland. Yu Darvish struck out seven for Texas, pushing his MLB-leading total to 214.

Marlins 6, Giants 5: Jeff Mathis lined the tie-breaking double in the bottom of the eighth inning on a ball that ricocheted off Andres Torres in center field, easily scoring Ed Lucas from first. Mathis scored the Marlins' first run of the game with a solo homer, while Lucas also had a multi-hit game. Steve Cishek threw a scoreless ninth for his 27th save of the year.

Orioles 7, Rockies 2: Chris Davis blasted a two-run homer, his major-league leading 45th of the season. Adam Jones went 3-for-5 with a double and a home run, while Davis finished with four hits. Scott Feldman picked up a quality start, holding the Rockies to two runs on five hits over 6 2/3 innings,.

Phillies 3, Dodgers 2: The Philadelphia benefited from a pair of ninth-inning errors by Hanley Ramirez, as Casper Wells scored on a Michael Young groundball that Ramirez bobbled:

The Phillies win snapped the Dodgers 10-game winning streak, and gave Ryne Sandberg his first career win as a manager. Cole Hamels tossed seven solid innings, allowing two runs on seven hits while fanning eight.

Braves 2, Nationals 1: Atlanta scored both of their runs in the bottom of the first inning, holding on to beat the Nationals for the second time in three games. Julio Teheran held Washington scoreless for six frames, surrendering five hits while striking out five. Craig Kimbrel recorded three strikeouts in the ninth inning for his 39th save of the years.

Reds 9, Brewers 1: Homer Bailey threw eight strong innings to win his third straight decision to help the Reds pull to within 2½ games of the Pirates in the National League Central. Cincinnati had 10 hits on offense, all singles, but added nine walks. The Reds scored five runs in the second inning and four more in the fifth to split a seriespitcher in Milwaukee.

Tigers 6, Royals 3: Miguel Cabrera continued his assault on American League pitching, hitting his 40th home run of the season and eighth home run in his last 13 games. Cabrera was 2-for-3 with three runs batted in for the AL Central-leading Tigers, 21-9 since the All-Star break. Cabrera also tied Joe DiMaggio on the all-time home run list. Max Scherzer pitched eight innings to improve to a whopping 18-1 on the season for Detroit.

White Sox 5, Twins 2: Alexei Ramirez finished a triple shy of the cycle and drove in three runs, leading Chicago to its third straight win. Hector Santiago allowed two runs, one earned, in six innings for the win for the White Sox.

Astros 7, Angels 5: A three-run home run by Matt Dominguez in the seventh inning led Houston to a victory in Anaheim, but the story was Mike Trout leaving early with hamstring tightness. The Angels have lost nine of 16 games against the Astros this season.

Padres 4, Mets 3: Will Venable hit a walk-off home run in the ninth inning to break a tie, his team-leading 17th home run of the season for San Diego. Matt Harvey allowed just two runs in six innings for the Mets and struck out six, passing Clayton Kershaw for the National League lead with 187 strikeouts.
