Red Sox unlikely to trade for Justin Morneau

Boston has little interest in the Twins first baseman despite Mike Napoli’s injury issues.

The Boston Red Sox are unlikely to make a waiver trade for Minnesota Twins first baseman Justin Morneau, reports Mike Berardino of the Pioneer Press.

Red Sox first baseman Mike Napoli is currently dealing with plantar fasciitis in his left foot, only starting one game against the New York Yankees over the weekend. Despite Napoli's injury, Boston is not expected to make a move for the Twins first baseman, according to a team official close to the situation.

Morneau, batting .261/.315/.417 with 14 homers in 499 plate appearances, cleared waivers on Wednesday. The Baltimore Orioles have remained "lukewarm" about a potential Morneau trade despite a pressing need at designated hitter, reports Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.

Daniel Nava and Mike Carp have both started at first base with Napoli out of the lineup. Nava is hitting .290/.377/.431, while Carp is batting .310/.368/.561. Boston promoted Xander Bogaerts on Monday, hoping the top prospect can provide a spark to a slumping offense.
