The Washington Nationals placed outfielder David DeJesus on revocable trade waivers on Monday after acquiring him from the Chicago Cubs for a player to be named later, according to Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal.

The Nationals claimed the 33-year-old veteran and were forced to take on his salary, which includes approximately $1 million for the remainder of this year and either a $6.5 million club option or $1.5 million buyout for 2014. The Nationals might have decided that’s too much to pay, Rosenthal and rival executives speculate.
The Nationals will find out if DeJesus clears waivers on Wednesday. If he does, Washington can keep him or trade him to any of the 29 other clubs.
Washington released Roger Bernadina to make room for DeJesus, who hit .250/.330/.401 in 318 plate appearances with the Cubs. He popped out in his lone plate appearance on Monday against his former team, which will be interested in re-signing him if his option is not exercised following the season, per Rosenthal.
