The Atlanta Braves may add a backup infielder and a left-handed bat off the bench before the waiver trade deadline, but want to evaluate their team during the next few weeks, reports Carroll Rogers of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Atlanta wants to see how well their injured players return to form before making any waiver trades.

Atlanta added Scott Downs before the trade deadline to fill their need for a left-handed reliever, but have not yet replaced utility infielder Ramiro Pena, who underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum. Braves general manager Frank Wren wants to delay making a decision until the team is healthy, telling Rogers:
“I think there’s a good chance (of another trade), once we have a better sense, get guys healthy, get the team functioning the way we see it functioning going forward - that’s short of other injuries. I think we’ll probably have some other activity, but all in all we’re pretty happy. The club is playing as well as we’ve played all year long. There’re a lot of positives.”

The Braves looked at adding a starting pitcher before the non-waiver trade deadline, but found the asking price too high. The team hopes Brandon Beachy can make a strong return from Tommy John surgery, and will continue to monitor his progress.
Jordan Schafer and B.J. Upton are nearing returns to the team, which will impact Atlanta's decision making. Wren also wants to see how Reed Johnson progresses; their most experienced pinch-hitter went on the DL Tuesday with Achilles tendinitis and has no timetable for a return.
