Giants designate Jeff Francoeur for assignment

Francoeur has not hit well at all this year while playing in a total of 81 games with the Royals and Giants.

The San Francisco Giants designated outfielder Jeff Francoeur for assignment on Tuesday, reports Dave Skretta of the Associated Press.

The move marks the second time in 2013 that Francoeur has been taken off his team's roster. The Giants signed him on July 9, just a few days after the Kansas City Royals released him.

The decision to DFA Francoeur was part of an effort by the Giants to improve their pitching following the loss of starter Chad Gaudin to injury. San Francisco recalled minor league pitchers Mike Kickham and Jean Machi, and needed the roster spot that was being used by Francoeur.

Francoeur’s play did not make it a difficult decision for the Giants to DFA him. During 22 games with the Giants, the 29-year-old hit just .194 with a .432 OPS. His numbers on the season aren’t much better -- Francoeur has a .204/.238/.298 line in 81 games. With just one good season in the last four years, Francoeur may have a long road ahead of him before he latches on with another major league squad.
