The Minnesota Twins placed catcher Joe Mauer on the seven-day disabled list Tuesday while he suffers from concussion symptoms, reports Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com. Chris Colabello was recalled from Triple-A Rochester to take his roster spot.

Mauer had been scratched from Tuesday night's game after experiencing dizziness during batting practice. Mauer took a foul-tip off his catcher's mask during Monday's game against the Mets. He was able to remain in that game, but the Twins refrained from taking any chances Tuesday.

With the 55-69 Twins well out of contention for the playoffs, the team can be careful with its franchise player. Head injuries can be difficult to diagnose and symptoms that seem to have disappeared can occasionally come back later. In a lost season, Minnesota does not have any need to rush Mauer back, though for now it does not appear he will be kept out long.
Mauer has hit .324/.404/.476 over 113 games this season and was on the American League All-Star roster for the sixth time in his career.
Colabello had been in the majors earlier this season when backup catcher Ryan Doumit was on the disabled list. Over 29 games, he posted a .674 OPS. The 29-year-old has been excellent for Rochester in 2013 with a .356/.432/.647 line.
Doumit will likely take over every-day catching duties while Mauer is out.
