Around the Bases: Kershaw does it all, Phillies walk-off, Twins beat Verlander

Nationals 5, Cubs 4 (13 innings): Denard Span doubled to start off the 13th, took third on a Steve Lombardozzi bunt and came home on ground ball back to the pitcher from Chad Tracy to give the Nationals the win. Stephen Strasburg dominated into the ninth inning, allowing just one run and five hits through 8 2/3 with eight Ks but he couldn't get that final out. He allowed a single to Junior Lake and then a three run shot to Donnie Murphy which tied the game.

Reds 2, Diamondback 1: Trevor Cahill and reliever Eury De La Rosa both got burned by wild ptiches in this one. Three consecutive wild one from Cahill with Shin-Soo Choo on first set up the first Reds run and Choo came around to score the winning run on De La Rosa's wild pitch in the eighth. Apart from missing his catcher, Cahill was quite effective, going seven innings and allowing one run on four hits and four walks and striking out seven, but Mat Latos was better, pitching eight innings and allowing one run on five hits and no walks with six strikeouts.

Dodgers 6, Marlins 0: This game was all Clayton Kershaw. The Dodgers lefty went eight shutout innings allowing five hits and walking three with six strikeouts and even singled, driving in a run in the fourth to put the Dodgers on the board. Carl Crawford drove in two runs for L.A. just to keep Kershaw from having to do anymore.

Twins 7, Tigers 6: Justin Verlander's struggles continue. The 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner allowed six runs on ten hits and three walks to the American League's fourth worst offense in this one. Ryan Doumit took Verlander deep with a three run shot in the fifth to put the Twins up, but the Tigers fought back with a three-run shot of their own from Austin Jackson in the next inning. Chris Herrmann's second RBI double of the day put Minnesota over the top in the eighth.

Yankees 5, Blue Jays 3: After three hours of rain-delays, the Yankees got six strong innings from Andy Pettitte, who allowed one run on four hits and three walks with three strike outs. Curtis Granderson hit a solo shot in the fifth for the bombers and a three run sixth was enough to put the Yankees up for good. J. P. Arencibia hit a solo shot for the Blue Jays.

Phillies 5, Rockies 4: The Phillies battled back from a three-run deficit with late inning heroics in the eighth and ninth. Darin Ruf delievered a two-run home run in the eighth to put the Phillies just one back. Michael Young then drove in Jimmy Rollins with an infield single in the ninth to tie it and Domonic Brown delivered the walk-off win one batter later with an RBI-single to right.

Cardinals 6, Braves 2: The Carindals clutch hitting ways continue. St. Louis got three straight RBI-doubles in the fifth to take the lead for good against Paul Maholm ad the Braves. Apart from a fourth inning, two run homer to Justin Upton, Joe Kelly was excellent on the hill for the Cards, going seven innings allowing just those two runs, seven hits, two walks and three strikeouts for the win.

White Sox 4, Royals 3 (12 innings): Conor Gillaspie lead off the twelfth inning with a solo home run and Addison Reed closed the door in the bottom of the inning to give the White Sox the win. The Royals started the scoring off in the fifth, getting four straight singles for their first run and adding two more with back-to-back sac flies off Jose Quintana. Chicago responded with two runs in the sixth and one in seventh off James Shields to tie things up.

Pirates 10, Giants 5: The hits just keep on coming for the Giants, as they dropped another game that wasn't even as close as the score indicated. Matt Cain was hit by a line drive and had to leave the game early, although X-rays were negative and he simply suffered a forearm contusion. And that was AFTER Cain gave up home runs to Garrett Jones and Jordy Mercer.
