Alex Avila injury: Tigers catcher begins rehab

Avila has been out since Aug. 11 with concussion-like symptoms.

Detroit Tigers catcher Alex Avila began his rehab assignment on Thursday night for Triple-A Toledo, reports Jason Beck of MLB.com.

Avila caught three innings, going 0-for-2 at the plate with a walk before being replaced by Ronny Paulino in the bottom of the fourth. Avila is expected to catch for Toledo again on Friday.

The catcher took a foul-ball off his mask on Aug. 8 against the Cleveland Indians. Avila started behind the plate on Aug. 10, but experienced concussion-like symptoms the next day and was placed on the 7-day disabled list.

Avila has struggled offensively this season, batting .198/.288/.340 in 289 plate appearances.

Brayan Pena has split time with Avila behind the plate, but is currently nursing a toe injury. Bryan Holaday is the only healthy catcher currently on the Tigers 25-man roster, which has Tigers manager Jim Leyland contemplating starting Victor Martinez behind the plate against the New York Mets over the weekend, according to Matthew B. Mowery of the Oakland Press.
