Jonathan Broxton injury: Reds RHP out for 6 months

The closer could return during spring training next season.

Cincinnati Reds relief pitcher Jonathan Broxton underwent season-ending surgery to repair a torn flexor muscle in his right forearm and is expected to miss six months, reports Mark Sheldon of MLB.com.

If there are no setbacks from the surgery, Broxton would be able to complete his rehab around the start of spring training next season.

Broxton left Wednesday's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks after surrendering a solo home run and a four-pitch walk. The Reds had rendered Broxton unavailable to pitch Monday or Tuesday with an elbow issue.

The reliever missed time earlier this season with an injury to his right elbow, returning to the team on Aug. 9. Broxton missed of 2011 season with elbow problems, undergoing arthroscopic elbow surgery in Sept. 2011.

The right-hander is in the first year of a three-year, $21 million contract. Broxton logged 31 innings for the Reds as a set-up man, posting a 4.11 ERA.
