Matt Cain injury: Giants pitcher placed on 15-day DL

Matt Cain’s rough season hit a new low on Friday.

Thearon W. Henderson

The San Francisco Giants placed starting pitcher Matt Cain on the 15-day disabled list Friday with a right forearm contusion, the team announced. The team purchased the contract of Yusmeiro Petit from Triple-A Fresno in a corresponding move.

Cain was hit in the right arm with a line drive off the bat of Pittsburgh Pirates first baseman Gaby Sanchez, forcing him to leave in the fourth inning on Thursday. Cain was replaced by reliever Guillermo Moscoso. The Giants lost the game, 10-5.

Cain is in the midst of the worst season of his nine-year MLB career. He is 8-8 with a 4.43 ERA, thanks in part to a career-worst home run rate of 1.2 per nine innings. He’s walking batters at a higher rate than he has in any season since 2011, but Cain’s strikeout rate of 8.1 per nine innings is the highest it’s been since 2006, when he finished with a 4.15 ERA.

The Giants also recalled left-hander Mike Kickham on Friday and optioned infielder Nick Noonan to Triple-A.
