Minnesota Twins catcher Joe Mauer was cleared for "light exercise" after undergoing an examination at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., on Friday, according to Mike Berardino of the Pioneer Press.

Mauer was “much sharper and clearer” during his examination than he was on Tuesday, when he experienced dizziness during batting practice, Twins assistant general manager Rob Antony told Berardino. Mauer could resume working out on Saturday and hitting off a tee within the next couple of days.
He is eligible to return from the seven-day concussion disabled list on Tuesday against the Kansas City Royals.

- Victor Martinez caught on Friday for the first time since August of 2011 in the Detroit Tigers' 6-1 win over the New York Mets. Martinez left the game after drawing a walk in the eighth inning, but his exit wasn't injury related, as he mentioned after the game to Fox Sports Detroit's Dana Wakiji:
“I feel really good right now. We’ll see how it feels tomorrow but I don’t think it’s going to be a big deal.”
- Martinez's teammate, Alex Avila, left his first rehab game on Thursday after complaining of a headache, Tigers manager Jim Leyland told MLB.com's Chris Iseman. Avila, who is on the seven-day concussion DL, was not in the lineup on Friday.
- Seattle Mariners manager, and former MLB catcher, Eric Wedge returned to the dugout on Friday for the first time since suffering a stroke on July 22.
- Finally, for some news about a non-catcher ... Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Brandon Beachy was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Friday with elbow inflammation. Beachy's velocity was down in his last start on Tuesday, according to ESPN's Buster Olney, and the 26-year-old right-hander followed that outing with a visit to Dr. James Andrews.
