Yankees’ Brett Gardner to have X-rays on hand after HBP

Gardner seems like he will be all right, but the Yankees want to be careful.

The New York Yankees asked Brett Gardner to undergo precautionary X-rays after the outfielder was struck on his right hand by a pitch during Friday night's game against the Rays, reports MLB.com's Bryan Hoch.

Gardner's hand remains swollen after being hit by a 95-mph Chris Archer fastball. He did stay in the game and picked up two hits after being hit by the pitch, but left the ballpark wearing an ice wrap.

The hand is the same one that Gardner broke in 2007 while playing in Double-A Trenton. For his part, Gardner seems unconcerned about his latest injury.

“It’s not too bad, so I’m not too worried about it,” Gardner was quoted as saying.

Gardner is batting .269/.337/.406 with eight home runs and 22 stolen bases this season.

The Yankees have not had good luck with hand injuries this year. Jayson Nix was just lost to a fracture after being hit by an R.A. Dickey pitch and Francisco Cervelli and Curtis Granderson have also missed stretches with broken hands of their own. The Yankees have also lost significant time from several other key players this season, including Alex Rodriguez, Derek Jeter, Mark Teixeira, and Kevin Youkilis.

New York is currently in fourth place in the AL East, six games out of first place. The team is also 3.5 games back for the second wild card spot. One more key injury could end any postseason hopes the Yankees still have.
