Alex Avila injury: Tigers C experiences headache during rehab game

Avila has been on the road to recovery from a concussion, but suffered a setback on Thursday.

Detroit Tigers catcher Alex Avila left a rehab start with Triple-A Toledo early on Thursday after he began to experience a headache, according to MLB.com. Avila has been on the disabled list since Aug. 11 due to concussion symptoms.

Avila caught three innings for Toledo before coming out of the game. Tigers manager Jim Leyland said Avila then made it through Friday with no further symptoms. Provided Avila continues to feel good, he may be the designated hitter for Toledo on Saturday.

Concussions can be a fickle injury. A player may go for days at a time with no discernible symptoms, only to have a bout of vertigo or a headache or another symptom pop up unexpectedly. For that reason, teams are often very cautious with players returning from concussions. The Tigers want to be sure Avila is fully healthy before he returns to the lineup.

“We’re not going to mess with something like that,” Leyland said.

Avila suffered his injury after being hit in the catcher’s mask by a foul tip. He was hitting .198 with a .628 OPS and nine home runs over 73 games this season.
