J.J. Putz injury: Diamondbacks reliever dislocates finger

Putz will head to the disabled list for the second time this season after suffering a dislocated little finger.

The Arizona Diamondbacks placed relief pitcher J.J. Putz on the disabled list Saturday, according to the team's official Twitter page.

Putz is suffering from a dislocated little finger on his right hand. The injury occurred when Putz attempted to field a Kevin Frandsen grounder during the seventh inning of Friday's game against the Phillies. Putz put out his pitching hand, but the ball ricocheted off to shortstop Chad Pennington, who fired a throw to first ahead of Frandsen to end the inning.

Putz paid the price for the play, suffering the dislocation along with a small cut. Those injuries are typically more than enough to keep a pitcher out for a couple of weeks.

Heath Bell and Joe Thatcher will take over as the primary set-up men for closer Brad Ziegler. This is Putz's second stint on the disabled list this season: He missed 46 games earlier in the year with a sprained UCL, a strained flexor pronator, and ulnar neuritis. The 36-year-old has pitched well when healthy, with a 2.43 ERA and 1.25 WHIP over 35 appearances in 2013.

Reliever Chaz Roe was called up from Triple-A Reno to take his roster spot. Roe has been up and down from the majors several times since the Diamondbacks purchased his contract in early July. He allowed three earned runs in five innings of work at the major league level, but has been phenomenal in the minors with a 1.11 ERA and 0.86 WHIP.
