Edinson Volquez designated for assignment by Padres

The Cubs hammered Volquez for six runs in 2/3 of an inning in his final start with the Padres.

The San Diego Padres designated starting pitcher Edinson Volquez for assignment, clearing room for right-hander Brad Brach, the team announced Saturday.

Volquez has struggled this season, going 9-10 with a 6.01 ERA over 142 1/3 innings. The Chicago Cubs shelled Volquez in his last start, scoring six runs on five hits in just 2/3 of an inning.

The Padres acquired Volquez before the 2012 season along with Yonder Alonso and Yasmani Grandal, sending Mat Latos to the Cincinnati Reds.

Volquez was a former top pitching prospect in the Texas Rangers farm system. The Rangers sent Volquez to the Reds before the 2008 season for outfielder Josh Hamilton. Volquez had an impressive 2008, going 17-6 with a 3.21 ERA, but slipped in 2009 before undergoing Tommy John surgery, never returning to his previous form following the procedure.

Brach is making his fourth stint with the Padres this year. The reliever owns a 3.97 ERA, striking out 24 batters over 22 2/3 innings.
