The Cincinnati Reds have placed Tony Cingrani on the disabled list with a lower back strain and will recall Greg Reynolds to start Sunday against the Milwaukee Brewers, the team's assistant director of media relations, Jamie Ramsey, announced.

Cingrani exited Tuesday's start against the Arizona Diamondbacks in the fourth inning after suffering the injury. The southpaw attempted to throw a bullpen session Friday, but only managed 12 pitches before cutting the session short.

Reds manager Dusty Baker discussed the decision with C. Trent Rosecrans of the Cincinnati Enquirer, telling the reporter:

“We’re going to start Reynolds because it appears Cingrani’s not ready and we’re short on pitching. We’ve just got to get him well. If we get him well, he’ll be able to throw a couple of ‘pens in-between and hopefully throw that last game (against) St. Louis (on Sept. 5).”

Cingrani has made 16 starts for the Reds this season with five appearances out of the bullpen, going 6-3 with a 2.76 ERA. The rookie has fanned 112 batters in 97 2/3 innings, giving him the highest K/9 among NL starters with at least 90 innings pitched.

Reynolds made one start for the Reds earlier this season, allowing five runs on eight hits over five innings against the San Francisco Giants. The right-hander has a career 7.55 ERA over 99 innings.
