Roy Halladay injury: Phillies RHP to start vs. Diamondbacks

The Phillies cut Halladay’s rehab stint short after Sunday’s originally scheduled starter pitched out of the bullpen Saturday.

After a handful of calls during Saturday's extra innings game, the Philadelphia Phillies made the decision to have Roy Halladay start in the majors on Sunday rather than make another rehab start, reports the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The Phillies had Tyler Cloyd slated to start Sunday's game. However, with Saturday's game going long, manager Ryne Sandberg made a few phone calls, including one to general manager Ruben Amaro. The decision was then made to bring Halladay up early, allowing Sandberg to have Cloyd come out of the bullpen on Saturday.

Halladay has been out since May when he had surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff and remove a bone spur in his elbow. He made two rehab starts in the lower minors over the past two weeks. His velocity was down during those starts and his control looked a little rusty.

This season has not gone as well as Halladay, 36, may have hoped. After a down season in 2012, he posted an 8.65 ERA and 1.46 WHIP over seven starts this season before having his surgery. Known for having pinpoint control, Halladay uncharacteristically has struggled with his command this season as well, allowing 4.5 walks per nine innings.

Sandberg expects another bullpen arm to be called up alongside Halladay to help a relief corps that combined to throw over 17 innings Saturday.
