The Boston Red Sox are tentatively planning on having starting pitcher Clay Buchholz rejoin the roster on Sept. 4, reports the Boston Herald.

Buchholz will make two rehab starts before rejoining the Red Sox at the close of the minor league season.

The Red Sox expect Buchholz to make two minor league rehab starts. However, the second of those would come just a few days before the end of the minor league season, thus limiting the number of starts he could make. Buchholz is expected to throw three innings and about 50 pitches today for Single-A Lowell.

Buchholz has been out since early June with inflammation in his right shoulder. He has been throwing off a mound since Aug. 6 and was able to pitch a simulated game on Aug. 20.
Manager John Farrell says that any potential innings limits Buchholz may have when he is activated will not be a problem.
“If they’re going to be four quality innings, I’d rather they be here than in Fort Myers. If he comes back and pitches as he was, it’d be a great pickup,” Farrell was quoted as saying.
The Red Sox would be better prepared to handle a short start when Buchholz would be activated, as well. Boston can bring up several relievers to aid their bullpen during September call-ups.
Prior to going on the disabled list, Buchholz had been one of the best starters in the league with a 1.71 ERA and 1.02 WHIP over 12 starts.
