Chris Johnson out of Braves lineup due to turf toe

Johnson suffered the injury during Saturday’s game and will be day-to-day.

Third baseman Chris Johnson is not in the Atlanta Braves lineup Sunday while he battles a case of turf toe, reports David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Johnson suffered the injury during Saturday’s game when he stumbled over first base on a single. It is unclear how long he may be out. For now, Johnson is day-to-day, but turf toe can linger for some time before it fully heals.

Johnson has been a pleasant surprise for the Braves this year. Acquired as part of the Justin Upton trade, there were some questions as to whether he would win the starting job at third base this season. Johnson came out of spring training as the starter and has hit for an .836 OPS and is second in the NL with a .331 batting average.

Johnson's injury leaves the Braves short in the infield. Atlanta was already playing without second baseman Dan Uggla, who is on the disabled list while he recovers from LASIK eye surgery. Uggla is expected to return on Wednesday.

Paul Janish, who has split time at second base with Uggla out, is in the lineup at third base to replace Johnson. Elliot Johnson will play second for Atlanta.
