Cardinals unlikely to trade for starting pitching

The Cardinals are not expected to make a move for a veteran starting pitcher before Aug. 31.

The St. Louis Cardinals are not expected to make a trade before the Aug. 31 deadline for players to be eligible on the postseason roster, reports Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak told Strauss that he expects the team to stand pat, stating “I think we are who we’re going to be.” St. Louis has been linked to a few veteran starting pitchers, but will rely on in-house options instead.

The Brewers placed former Cardinals starter Kyle Lohse on waivers, according to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, but the right-hander did not make it through unclaimed. Washington Nationals starter Dan Haren did clear waivers, but the Cardinals are not willing to pay the Nationals price.

St. Louis enters Monday tied with the Pittsburgh Pirates for the NL Central lead at 76-54. The Cardinals placed Jake Westbrook on the 15-day DL Friday, but have a number of rookie pitchers who can fill-in for Westbrook, including Michael Wacha, Carlos Martinez and Tyler Lyons. Lyons is scheduled to start against the Cincinnati Reds in place of Westbrook on Monday.
