Matt Kemp injury: Dodgers OF could begin rehab assignment this week

Kemp is not expected to play every day when he returns to the Dodgers lineup.

Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp could start a minor-league rehab assignment this week, reports Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times.

Kemp sprained his ankle last month, sending him to the disabled list for the third time this season. He told Hernandez that he now feels “no pain at all,” and is ready to return.

The outfielder will need to run the bases before he can begin his assignment, which is expected to take place in the next two days. The minor-league season ends next week, although Dodgers manager Don Mattingly indicated that the club could set up instructional games for Kemp.

Kemp’s return will create an outfield logjam, but Mattingly plans to ease him back into the lineup, telling Hernandez:

“I’ll get him back in the mix, get him comfortable. I’ll do what I did with Carl [Crawford] when he was coming back from his hamstring. He gets a couple days in there, he gets a day off. I’ll be careful with him.”

The slugger has had a disappointing season, batting .263/.319/.382 with 12 doubles, five homers and 27 RBI in 62 games.
