Dodgers sign Edinson Volquez, per report

The recently-released Volquez has struggled this season, which doesn’t make him much different than recent Dodgers’ fifth starters.

Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

With the Los Angeles Dodgers struggling to find consistent production from their fifth starter, the team has reached an agreement to sign recently-released pitcher Edinson Volquez, per Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports. and confirmed by Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times.

The Dodgers’ interest was first reported by ESPN’s Buster Olney.

More Dodgers coverage: True Blue LA

Chris Capuano has been nothing short of dreadful for Los Angeles lately, with a 5.29 ERA over his last ten starts. He’s been even worse more recently, allowing 16 runs and 32 hits in just over 19 innings in his previous four starts.

The San Diego Padres let Volquez go earlier on Wednesday. He seems like an odd choice for a Dodgers team that hopes to improve its rotation. Volquez had been suffering through perhaps the worst season of his career with a 6.01 ERA and 1.67 WHIP over 27 starts.

The Dodgers may hope that they can fix Volquez, who is certainly still talented. He has the ability to make batters swing and miss, but his control has caused him to never average fewer than four walks per nine innings. If Los Angeles can help him with his accuracy, Volquez could help with a late season push and perhaps even be an asset out of the bullpen when the postseason rolls around.
