Ryan Ludwick injury: Reds OF will be back soon, GM says

Ryan Ludwick has been out since opening day, but may be only days away from a return.

Cincinnati Reds general manager Walt Jocketty said injured outfielder Ryan Ludwick should be back within a week, according to a report from the St. Louis Post Dispatch.

Ludwick has been out since opening day, when he suffered a separated shoulder, which led to surgery on a torn labrum. He began a minor league assignment in late July and is now nearing a return to the majors. In seven games between Low-A and Triple-A, Ludwick has two hits and three walks over 19 at-bats.

Reds manager Dusty Baker said he would like Ludwick to get 50 at-bats in the minors before returning to the big league squad. Baker also noted Ludwick said he would be ready for a return after around 30 at-bats.

Ludwick launched 26 home runs while hitting .275/.346/.531 over 125 games in 2012, his first year playing for the Reds.

Cincinnati left fielders have combined for just a .302 wOBA in 2013. Derrick Robinson, Chris Heisey, Donald Lutz, and Xavier Paul have all seen time at the position in Ludwick's absence.
