White Sox to release OF Dewayne Wise

Dewayne Wise brought a decent glove to the White Sox this season, but his well-below-average performance at the plate will soon result in his release.

Denny Medley-US PRESSWIRE

The Chicago White Sox requested waivers on Dewayne Wise on Saturday and plan to release the veteran outfielder, according to Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune.

Wise, 35, hasn't played since May 29, when he suffered a strained right hamstring and landed on the 15-day disabled list. Through the first two months of the season, Wise hit .234/.258/.328 in 66 plate appearances for the last-place White Sox, while playing above-average outfield defense, mostly in center field. In 11 big-league seasons, Wise is a career .228/.264/.381 hitter who is perhaps best-known for the catch he made to rob the Rays' Gabe Kapler of a home run and preserve a perfect game for Mark Buehrle on July 23, 2009.

The 40-67 White Sox have the worst offense in the American League, combining for an 82 OPS+. The team’s outfielders have produced at a better clip than most of the other positions on the diamond for the White Sox, but as a whole, the unit is below average compared to the rest of the league.
