The San Diego Padres have pulled third baseman Chase Headley off waivers, and he will remain with the team for the rest of the year, reports Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.

San Diego will attempt to sign the third baseman to a long-term contract during the offseason.

The Padres placed Headley on revocable waivers on Aug. 20, but another team placed a claim on the third baseman. The two sides did not end up working on out a deal for Headley, so he will return to San Diego and cannot be placed on waivers for the remainder of the season.

Headley is making $8.5 million this season, and is eligible for arbitration this winter. San Diego will attempt to sign him to a long-term contract during the offseason, but may field trades if they are unable to reach an agreement, according to Heyman. Headley will be eligible for free agency after the 2014 season.
The third baseman had a breakout campaign in 2012, hitting .286/.376/.498 while playing strong defense at the hot corner. Headley has taken a step back in 2013, batting .240/.331/.368, but has still provided value with his glove.
