The Boston Red Sox acquired veteran infielder John McDonald on Saturday, sending minor league pitcher Nefi Ogando to the Philadelphia Phillies, general manager Ben Cherington announced.

McDonald is joining his fourth team in 2013.

McDonald has played for the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Cleveland Indians as well as the Phillies this season. He has disappointed at the plate, hitting just .098/.179/.164 in 68 plate appearances.
The utility man does give the Red Sox depth on the left side of the infield, where he is considered a strong defender. Boston will need to clear a spot on their 40-man roster for McDonald.
Red Sox third base coach Brian Butterfield had high praises for McDonald back in June, telling Evan Drellich of Mass Live:
“In order to be able to make a play when hasn’t played for eight days, and make plays consistently - the best guy I’ve ever had as a utility player is John McDonald. And I was never surprised at anything Johnny did defensively, because he rehearsed it every day at full speed.”
Ogando, 24, has spent the season with High-A Salem. The right-hander has made 33 appearances out of the bullpen, posting a 4.09 ERA with 44 strikeouts.
