Salvador Perez injury: Royals catcher placed on 7-day DL with concussion
Perez underwent concussion tests Saturday night after being struck in the catchers mask by a foul tip.

Perez was struck in the catcher’s mask by a foul tip during Saturday night’s game. Though he appeared visibly shaken, he stayed in the game. He then spent the night in a hospital while undergoing concussion tests. The Royals believe Perez is only suffering from a mild concussion, but still chose to place him on the special concussion DL.
After hitting well in a half-season in 2012, Perez has hit .278/.309/.382 over 92 games in 2013, but has just a .549 OPS since the beginning of July.
Hayes has played parts of the previous four seasons with the Marlins, with a .627 OPS over 143 major league games. Playing for Triple-A Omaha this season, Hayes has hit .231/.280/.441 with 11 home runs. He is also known as a strong defensive backstop.
The Royals also put pitcher Wade Davis on emergency leave to tend to a family matter. He will miss between three and seven days. Pitcher Will Smith was called up to take his roster spot.
