Luis Valbuena injury: Cubs 3B placed on 15-day DL with strained oblique

Valbuena is out with a strained oblique. The Cubs have called up Logan Watkins to take his place.

The Chicago Cubs have placed infielder Luis Valbuena on the disabled list with a strained right oblique, reports Bruce Miles of the Daily Herald. Second baseman Logan Watkins was called up to take Valbuena's spot on the active roster.

Valbuena suffered the injury during Friday night's game against the Dodgers. Oblique injuries often take more than two weeks to heal, so it is unlikely that Valbuena will return when first eligible after the 15-day minimum. He should be able to return by the end of August, however.

Valbuena has hit .225/.330/.372 over 89 games in 2013 while playing mostly third base. While he is out, the Cubs will use Cody Ransom and Donnie Murphy at the hot corner.

Watkins, 23, has hit .243 with a .711 OPS in his first season at Triple-A Iowa. Over his minor league career, he has gotten on base at a .365 clip.

This will be Watkins’ first stint on the major league roster.
