Derek Jeter injury: Yankees SS undergoes MRI on calf

The Yankees shortstop did not play on Saturday or Sunday due to lingering calf and quad issues.

New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter underwent an MRI on his calf Sunday, reports Andy McCullough of the Star-Ledger. The team is still awaiting the results before it can make an official announcement on his status.

Jeter has battled a number of injury issues this year. First, he underwent offseason ankle surgery, which sidelined him during the first half of the season. Jeter then returned from his ankle injury on July 11, but injured his quad against the Kansas City Royals and went back on the DL.

The shortstop got back from his second DL stint July 28, but hurt his calf against the Tampa Bay Rays. Jeter played in two games against the Los Angeles Dodgers and one game against the San Diego Padres, but sat out Saturday and Sunday with lingering quad and calf soreness.

Alex Rodriguez is tentatively scheduled to return to the Yankees on Monday, and the team could make room for him by placing Jeter on the DL for a third time this year. MLB is expected to announce a Rodriguez suspension Monday at the latest, but it's unclear if the third baseman will be allowed to play should he appeal the penalties.
