Hanley Ramirez injury: Dodgers SS hurts right shoulder, leaves game

Hopefully Ramirez won’t have to return to the DL after his latest mishap.

Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports

Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Hanley Ramirez left Sunday's game against the Chicago Cubs in the bottom of the seventh after injuring his right shoulder while going into the stands to catch a foul ball.

The shortstop made a running catch on a drifting David DeJesus pop up while surrounded by fans, but flipped over the wall into the seats.

He came up clutching his right shoulder, and manager Don Mattingly immediately removed him from the game. Nick Punto replaced Ramirez at shortstop.

Ramirez missed time earlier this season with a torn thumb ligament and a strained left hamstring. He’s been dominant when healthy, entering Sunday hitting .365/.413/.651 with 11 homers and 37 RBI. He returned to the lineup from his second DL stint on June 4, and the Dodgers have gone 36-17 since.

Ramirez underwent season-ending shoulder surgery in September 2011, but that procedure was on his left shoulder. The shortstop also underwent an arthroscopic procedure on his left shoulder after the 2007 season.
