Derek Jeter injury: Yankees SS diagnosed with grade 1 calf strain

Jeter may have to head back to the DL for the third time this year.

New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter underwent an MRI Sunday and was diagnosed with a grade 1 calf strain, reports Wallace Matthews of ESPNNewYork.com.

Jeter missed three weeks in 2012 with the same injury in his right calf. The Yankees have yet to determine if Jeter will head back to the disabled list for a third time this season, but may make a decision as early as Monday.

The shortstop discussed his injury-riddled season with Matthews, telling the reporter:

“It’s been terrible. It’s been like a nightmare. The whole season has been a nightmare. I wish that wasn’t the case and we were sitting here talking about something besides another injury. We’ll see what happens. I have no idea.”

Jeter has battled a number of injuries this year. He underwent offseason ankle surgery that kept him sidelined for the first half of the season. New York activated Jeter on July 11, but he injured his quad in his first game and went straight back to the DL.

Jeter returned July 28 after his second DL stint, but injured his calf in his first game back against the Tampa Bay Rays. He played three games after the calf injury, but did not play Saturday or Sunday.
